Disabling healthconditions can impact sexual function, identity, self-esteemand self-image, fertility and pregnancy. People canexperience primary impairments such as a loss ofsensibility or erectile dysfunction, but also consequencesof secondary impairments like incontinence, pain, fatigue,or spasticity. Moreover, limitations of activities andparticipation restrictions can impact intimacy, sexuality andreproduction. Therefore, sexual issues should be an integralpart of quality rehabilitation care.Components of a sexual rehabilitation programme areinformation/education of patient (and partner), practicaladvice, finding new positions, medication, using assistivedevices and aids (like vibrator, sex toys, lubricating gel,massage oil), pelvic floor training, coping strategies andaddressing self-image and self-esteem. People should beencouraged to explore their changed bodies andexperiment. Sexual rehabilitation requires a personalizedbiopsychosocial and integrative approach by the entiremultiprofessional team, including peer counsellors.
