Obituary

Prof. Rashid Ahmad Qureshi

Prof Rashid Ahmad Qureshi had a fatal heart attack on 6th May, 1993 while serving the patients in the operation theatre at Ittefaq Hospital, Lahore. He was a scholarly teacher, a renowned surgeon and pious human being, born in a religious family on 2OthJuly, 1928. He had a brilliant academic record. He secured 1st position in M.B.B.S. examination in 1951 from King Edward Medical College, Lahore. He was awarded many medals during his stay at K.E. Medical College, including Dr. Rahim Khan Gold Medal, Narper Nelson Raghbir Sing Memorial Gold Medal, Neil Memorial Silver Medal in Surgery, Silver Medal in Diseases of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, Silver Medal in Materia Medica. He did one year house job with Prof Amir-ud-Din in North Surgical Unit, Mayo Hospital, Lahore and then joined Government service in 1952. In 1960 he proceeded to U.K. for higher studies and was awarded Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1962. He served as Assistant Professor, Surgery at Nishtar Medical College, Multan from 1962 to 1968. During 1965 war he served in Pakistan Army for one year and was awarded Tamgha-e-Jang for his meritorious services. He was promoted to the rank of Professor of Surgery in 1968 while still at Nishtar Medical College, Multan. In 1971 he was transferred to King Edward Medical College, Lahore from where he retired on 19th July, 1988. After retirement he continued to serve humanity at Ittefaq Hospital where he established Postgraduate Surgical Faculty which was recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan for FCPS-II examina­tion. He was the First President, Society of Surgeons of Pakistan, Lahore. He was highly spoken of by his seniors and was equally respected by all his colleagues, students and patients. With his death surgical community has lost a respected senior colleague. May his soul rest in eternal peace, Ameen!
