Sarwar J. Zuberi  ( )

Prof. Sarwar Jehan Zuberi, served the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association as Editor since 1974. Gifted with the art of writing and editing, she worked untiringly for all these thirty years with the unending goal of improving the publication from day to day. Today we can compare the JPMA with any other international journal especially, in the standard of articles. Dr. Zuberi has the credit of getting the journal indexed with the Index Medicus.in 1975. The journal was like her child. She took extreme care to maintain its standard and was always trying to add new sections, which she did very successfully. The Students corner and Family Physician's section have provided good readership. Dr. Sarwar Zuberi was a Dow graduate and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh. She received her training in Gastrenterology and Hepatology from the General Hospital, Birmingham, UK, Lahey Clinic, Boston, Massachusetts, USA and as a Colombo Plan scholar in Melbourne, Australia. She received numerous national awards including the President of Pakistan Award for "Pride of Performance". Dr. Zuberi was a founder member of the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterology and G.I.Endoscopy and was president from 1995 - 1997. She was also a founder member of the Asian Pacific Association for the study of Liver and member of the International Association for the study of Liver. She was on the Editorial Board of many international journals, including the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Melbourne, Australia. Prof. Zuberi worked with the Pakistan Medical Research Council from 1968. She retired in 1995 and later held the responsibilities of the Chairperson of PMRC till 1996. She was then given the title of Scientist Emeritus, PMRC. Prof. Zuberi has published more than 254 original research papers in national and international journals. She has conducted numerous workshops on medical writing and research technologies. She was the Dean for Research at Ziauddin Medical University, Karachi, till she passed away on 17 March 2004. The sad demise of Prof. Zuberi has left a huge lacuna in many sections of medical science. Her contributions were numerous and there must be many Pakistani doctors around the world who would have attained heights due to acquiring training and guidance from her. She was a good friend to many and one could look up to her in times of stress. She will be fondly remembered and missed for a very long time. May her soul rest in peace. Fatema Jawad
