Welcome to Journal Of Pakistan Medical Association

Dr. Mirza Naqi Zafar - Department of Biochemistry, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Karachi.

March, 2010

January 1981, I got a call from Dr. Syed Hasan Naqvi to meet him at the PMA House at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the office of JPMA. I was there in time and he took me to an office where sat Dr. Sarwar Zuberi, Dr. Haziqul Yaqeen, Dr. Fatema Jawad and Dr. Huma Qureshi. I was introduced and he said to Dr. Zuberi - he is a researcher and biochemist and will be a useful member of the editorial board. There I was in the presence of this illustrious company. I felt great and soon after he left Dr. Zuberi handed me two papers to correct for language and typographical mistakes. Young of age and recently returned from UK I often got on the wrong side of the boss with usual scolding. I could not miss my Student Biryani and in the process took Dr. Huma, Dr. Waqar with me. To stop this she ensured that we had Biryani every Saturday from Firdouse near PMA House. It was a wonderful learning experience where first hand teaching was received from Dr. Zuberi and Dr. Fatema. Is this how you do things? Sorry was the usual answer. I soon found myself being in-charge of printing. Long hours were spent at the press with Mr. Shamshad, checking plates and paper quality. Every Saturday was JPMA day. So important was JPMA my part of life that when I joined SIUT, I had the courage to inform Prof. Adib Rizvi that Saturday I have to go to JPMA. It was so wonderful when in January 1992 issue I saw myself elevated to the status of Assistant Editor. She said to me "Baccha" you have come of age and fit for this position. Unfortunately that day came when this great lady left us - a loss we thought could never be replaced. But there was she the able Joint Editor, Dr. Fatema Jawad. She took charge and carried us from where Dr. Zuberi left. We were used to her but Dr. Fatema got her own colour and took the journal from print mainly to web and mail. Little did we know that a journal indexed by our seniors with limited circulation will become the foremost Medical Journal of the country and a reference point for international researchers.
What I have learned from JPMA, whether be editing, writing, printing or marketing has been of immense value to me.
In 2010 it is nice to review articles whose quality is far superior than two decades ago. There can be no praise which can be enough for Dr. Zuberi, Dr. Fatema, Dr. Huma and others who were part of JPMA editorial board. They raised the standards of the Journal after rewriting entire articles for the benefit of the authors. Great work - I miss the old Saturday routine which I am sure the youngsters enjoy as I did.
